3 REASONS WHY EVERY CHILD SHOULD USE A WATER FILTER BOTTLE

Water filter bottles protect children from the harmful effects of unfiltered water

Every child has the right to clean and safe drinking water, but exactly how safe is our water?  It may look clean and normal to the naked eye, but it may be unsafe for drinking without purifying it. According to recent studies due to contaminated water and weak immune systems, diarrhoea is the second leading cause of ill health in children under the age of five years old. Diarrhoea takes the lives of around 525 000 children every year as it contains elements such as ammonia, arsenic, copper, pathogens and fluoride, but it can be prevented through safe drinking water.   There are many ways of filtering your child’s water source however it’s not portable, which is one of the many benefits of a water filter bottle. Here are the reasons why.

Maintains health

You’ve heard the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” but did you know that providing your child with filtered water from a water filter bottle is just as effective? By allowing them to quench their thirst with pure drinking water, you’ll be protecting their developing immune system. How is this possible you may ask? Well, it removes any harmful particles, as well as protects their bodies from diseases, which all leads to fantastic overall health and sustained energy levels.

Affordable

The children of today are the future leaders of tomorrow and they need to be taught the importance of an ever-increasing scarce resource like water, especially clean drinking water. Bottled water is not always the answer and is not always environmentally friendly. You’re probably under the impression that bottled water doesn’t cost that much either; however, add it all up and it’ll total to a pretty penny.

Instead of purchasing water or installing water filters in your home if you don’t have financial resources, invest in a water filter bottle. You’ll be saving money at the end of the day, which can be put towards your child’s education or extra-curricular activities.

Go Green

The earth is our home, and it’s in our best interest that we take care of it with renewed effort. By giving children bottles with water filters, it will not only help the planet (no plastic throw-aways) but also teach them about preserving water and Mother Nature at the same time. Most plastic bottles end up in landfills which have a massive impact on the environment as it takes time for the plastic to degrade.  In addition to this, it takes a significant amount of energy to produce plastic bottles, as well as the energy it takes to deliver and store the bottles before going to market.

By having a water filter bottle, your kids can enjoy fresh water, while living in the education of preserving nature and water.

In today’s society, everything is modernising and moving toward conservation and education. Move with the times and join the movement in conserving our water.

HOW A WATER FILTER HELPS TREAT HARD WATER

Are you experiencing any of these problems? Your clothes and linen feel rough; your dishes have strange white spots, there’s a build-up of grime and unattractive stains on the faucets in your kitchen and bathroom. If you answered yes to one of these, then you might be experiencing something we in the water industry, like to call hard water.

What is hard water?

Hard water contains a significant amount of minerals such as calcium and magnesium which accumulates in the water cycle. The aqua is safe for consumption, however, in time it can cause expensive and embarrassing issues, such as a costly plumbing bill, damage to your favourite ensembles, as well as ugly stains in the bathroom and sinks, eventually requiring repairs.

Now you might be thinking, sure this might be true but how do I lessen the damage from hard water. Well, a good start would be to install a water filtration system.

Water Filtration System

Just because something can’t be seen, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not there. The primary purpose of a water filtration system is to capture all the unwanted particles, as well as allow filtered clean water through. This process is achieved using a material with “holes” or fine pores. These “holes” can be less than a 1/1000th of a millimetre in diameter, only allowing H2O molecules to go through while trapping viruses and bacteria in the filters.

How a water filter helps the water softening process

Having chlorine in your water is like having cholesterol in your bloodstream. It thickens and hardens anything it comes into contact with.

The water filter works well for this, as it reduces the levels of chlorine and magnesium from your water source by removing contamination, ensuring that you’re left with cleaner and slightly softer water.

With our hurried lives these days, time is precious, and a water filter will undoubtedly save you time in the future, as well as large sums of money.

Once you’ve completed your water filter installation, it would be best to install a water softener, so you’re guaranteed soft water.

What is a water softener?

A water softener is a unit that is used to soften water, by completely removing the minerals that cause the water to harden.

How does it work?

It’s known as the ion exchange. The main component of a water softener is the mineral tank. A separate brine tank is located in the water softener, which uses ordinary salt to make the brine solution. When in operation, the hard water moves into the mineral tank, whereas the magnesium and calcium move into the beads, replacing the sodium ions.

Water is becoming a scarce commodity, and it is essential that we as a country not only use it sparingly but also maintain it to the best of our ability. Apart from boiling water, installing a water filtertogether with a water softening unit is the perfect solution.

4 DIFFERENT TYPES OF WATER PURIFIERS

4 Water Purifiers for Healthy Living

With the recent water contamination problems taking place in cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town, it’s crucial that we as consumers take preventive measures, to protect the health of ourselves and our loved ones. However, with all the new contraptions on the market, it’s difficult to distinguish which water purifiers are best suited for your needs.

In today’s market, you might come across a water purifier and just purchase it, because its primary purpose is to purify your water, right? Wrong. Water purifiers come in different sizes and use different kinds of technology to clean water that contains germs and bacteria.

Reverse Osmosis

This is considered a favourite amongst most homeowners and companies. Reverse Osmosis removes dissolved salts, germs, as well as other impurities with the help of membrane technology.

These impurities are separated using the semipermeable membrane, which leaves you with clean, crystal clear aqua.

This water filtration is cost effective and convenient as it can easily be installed under counter for daily home use in the kitchen or bathroom.

Ultra Filtration (UF)

It removes bacteria from muddy and cloudy water, doesn’t require electricity and is easy to maintain, which is why homeowners prefer this piece of technology.

An Ultra Filtration system can get rid of any unhealthy particles in water by making use of an Ultra Filtration membrane. Slightly larger pores are found on the membrane, which enables the product to clean water containing many forms of bacteria.

Activated Carbon Filter Purifier

This product is easy to use and cleans one’s water by using activated carbon filters for the purification process. Chemicals such as chlorine, impurities, as well as pesticides, are all removed using the carbon filters. The best part about this is that it not only betters the taste and odour of the H2O but does not require electricity to operate correctly. Talk about value for your money.

Ultra Violet Water Purifier (UV)

If you prefer simple yet extremely effective methods, then this could be the purifier for you. This filter uses ultraviolet light to get rid of any cysts, microbes, germs and bacteria from the water. How does this work you ask? Well, a small mercury lamp is located in the purifier that creates short UV radiation. It then illuminates the water and destroys any viruses and bacteria, so they aren’t able to multiply and eventually die off.

This purifying method only kills the germs, it doesn’t remove the dead cells from the water. Separate filters are needed for the bacteria to be discarded.

This form of water purifying is usually used with various types of filtration, like reverse osmosis or activated carbon filters.  UV filtration is the most effective form of purification.

Various diseases can be transmitted via contaminated water, and without the proper water purifier, you’re more likely to be a victim of contamination. Don’t waste your time and money by purchasing any filter, make sure it’s suits your specific needs first. It is always best to speak to a professional first, so as to avoid installing the wrong system.

UNDER THE SINK WATER FILTRATION VS. WHOLE HOUSE WATER FILTRATION

You’ve just got home from a long, eventful day and you’re exhausted. Taking out your pyjamas and slippers, towel in hand, you head to the bathroom for a nice hot shower. Once that’s done, you pour yourself a tall glass of cold water. Finally, you head off to bed, only to be awoken during the night by your thirst, taking three big gulps of the water, you fall back into a deep slumber.   The next morning as you get up for work, you discover that you’re ill, but you’re unsure of what could have caused it.

When it comes to water, it’s a crucial part of life, we use it in many ways, from food preparation and washing clothes to drinking and bathing.

The average human uses 20- 50 litres of water per day; this is why we have to ensure that its contamination free. By consuming unsafe water, you’re increasing the chance of bacteria and diseases.

Stop spending money on bottled water and save in the long run but installing a water filtration system. This handy technology will ensure you’re kept fit as a fiddle.

Now you might be asking, what is a water filtration system?

A water filter removes impurities by reducing contamination of water using a thin physical barrier, a chemical process, or a biological process.

The most common way to filter water is through the process of Reverse Osmosis.

How does Reverse Osmosis work?

The process works by using a high-pressure pump to increase the pressure on the salt side of the Reverse Osmosis (RO). This forces the water across the semi-permeable RO membrane leaving almost all dissolved salt behind in the reject stream.

There are two types of water filtration systems, one of which is an under the sink water filter and the other a whole house system.

They may serve the same purpose, but they are, however, different.

What is an under the sink water filtration system?

Also referred to as point-of-use, this system is known as a drinking water system. It refers to any under sink filtration system installed at the top level or a different water access point.

Better Tasting Water

This system works wonders, removing any bad taste from your glass of H20. It removes anything ranging from strange colours and odours to other water solubles which may not be life-threatening. However, it’ll certainly improve the quality of water consumed, making it more palatable.

Safer Water

It’s not a quality product for no reason. The system reduces any health contaminants such as lead and organic chemicals that could cause harm to the human body.

What is a whole house filtration system?

Commonly known as Point-Of-Entry, a whole house filtration system refers to the system installed at the end point of water lines of the house. It connects to the main water line, which then enters your home so that all water dispensing items such as faucets, toilets, showers and baths have treated water.

Removes Contamination

The filter works in such a way that it removes all chemicals from the water. Chemicals such as heavy metal, chlorine and chloramines will be a thing of the past.

Healthier Bathroom Time

Due to the removal of chlorine and chloramines, one will feel better health wise, as these contaminants can cause headaches, dizziness and red eyes.

Softens Water

Clothes will stay soft and colourful with this filtration product. Hair and skin will look and feel healthier and better. How is this possible you may ask? Well by removing contaminants, you’re not just investing in a water filtration system, but also a cleaner Laundromat and natural beauty product.

Maintains Water Using Appliances

Better quality filtered water free of contaminants and chemicals used by certain household appliances will leave your pocket feeling fuller, as you will not need to replace these or maintain them as often.

If you’re looking for safer drinking water to consume, then the under the sink water filtration system is the best option for you, however, if you’re looking for better quality water in all aspects of your home, then the whole house water filtration system will be your best choice.

Remember, despite having pure water; we should use it sparingly and consciously, to both save money and our natural resources, as most of South Africa is either in a water crisis or will be in one in the future.

Water saving tips

  • Instead of draining bath water and dirty dishwater, use the grey water for watering plants or flushing toilets.
  • Install a cistern displacement device inside your toilet to reduce the amount of water used in each flush.
  • Install a water meter. The meter will monitor water usage and the amount you spend while helping you save this precious resource too.

BENEFITS OF INSTALLING A WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM IN YOUR HOME

Research has shown that an average person consumes about 106 000 litres of water a year. This highlights the necessity of filtering your water at home. One’s quality of water affects one’s health and well-being, especially when you consider how much of it gets consumed in a year. Here are some benefits to installing a water filtration system in our home.

REMOVES WATER CONTAMINANTS

Researchers have found that there are over 2100 water contaminants in our tap water. The only way to ensure that our water is free from any contamination is to install a water filtration system.

REDUCE HEALTH RISKS

A water filtration system doesn’t just eliminate contaminants from water but also chlorine and other harmful bacteria commonly found in water. This removal helps eliminate water related medical conditions such as bladder cancer, colorectal cancer, colon cancer and other intestinal and digestive problems.

ADDED HEALTH BENEFITS

Healthy water is vital for the health of every cell and organ in the body. Clean water prevents dehydration, improves health and fitness and keeps one’s skin healthy. A constant intake of clean water also helps children develop a healthy immune system. Children have also been known to get psoriasis and eczema from drinking unfiltered tap water in some cases.

EFFICIENCY COST EFFECTIVE

A filtration system installed at home means that you have healthy drinking water on top.  You don’t get more efficient than that. It is also cheaper to filter your own drinking water than to buy 106 000 litres of bottled filter water a year. Most water filtration systems are also designed to be passive, which means that there are no hidden costs. Once installed, they usually only require the filters to be cleaned occasionally.

BETTER TASTE. BETTER SMELL

Filtered water eliminates the bad smell and taste of regular tap water by removing the lead, chlorine and bacteria found in tap water.

CLOTHING PROTECTION

The chemicals in unclean tap water will leave a deposit on one’s clothes, which will cause them to smell differently and can even cause allergies and rashes.

REDUCE PLUMBING REPAIR BILLS

Plumbing repairs can be reduced substantially when you use filtered water because the heavy metals, minerals and chemicals that cause damage to your plumbing systems are removed. Appliances using water also last longer as there is only clean water running through them.

Install a home filtration system to take advantage of all the health benefits and the savings on various home plumbing systems.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM FOR YOUR HOME

According to the NSF, the Public Health and Safety Organisation, there are a number of steps to follow in order to determine the best water filtration system for your home.

  1. They suggest firstly – determine what exactly is in your water.
  2. Then you decide what contaminants you want to eliminate before you choose your preferred water treatments.

A comprehensive water analysis or water testing is the only way to determine what exactly is in water.  The municipal water supply is regulated to ensure a reasonable quality of water.  However, some areas may have different water qualities due to a number of contributing factors, which can damage appliances, pipes and cause health issues for the people that drink it.

The kinds of contaminates to consider eliminating are chlorine, bacteria, lime scale, sediment, salt, iron and metals.  Chlorine is usually used to sterilise municipal drinking water, which kills most harmful germs but it is harmful to your health if consumed for a long period of time.  Bacteria in water could cause illness if consumed at all.  The presence of lime scale will not harm consumers but it does cause damage to household appliances and reduces the flow through pipes and can even cause blockages.  Sediment is all sand, organic material or small particles suspended in the water, which usually travels with dissolved components that are harmful to your health.  Sediment is also very harmful to appliances.  Salt needs to be removed to make water drinkable and iron needs to be removed to ensure good health over prolonged periods of consumption.

Once you have seen which contaminates your water contains and have decided which ones you want to remove, then you need to select the most effective way to remove it.  There are several options to choose from, which range from whole-house systems to point-of-use systems.  Whole-house systems treat the water as it enters a home, while the point of use systems treat the water at the point of use in the home.

So, for instance, if you get the results of your water analysis back and it indicates that you had salt in your water, you will need a filtration system with the process of reverse osmosis because this is the only way to remove salt from water to make it drinkable.  This point-of-use system would be the best filtration system for your home.

Our health is extremely important and a home is a big investment worth looking after. Choosing the best filtration system for your home and family could be tricky. Consult a professional to give you the best advice, as it is a long term investment.

WHY SOUTH AFRICAN’S SHOULD PURCHASE WATER FILTERS

People often say – “it comes out of my tap clear and it tastes okay so why do I need tp purchase water filters?”

Most contaminants found in our drinking water have no taste and do not add any colour to the water so how do you really know it is safe for your family to drink?

The reality is we are using many more chemicals in our manufacturing, processing, farming and everyday lives today, than in any other period in history. Where do all these chemicals go after their use? Do they mysteriously disappear somewhere?

Chemicals that end up in Our Water Supply

Most chemicals we use in today’s world end up as a waste by-product and typically end up on the ground surface and then get washed into our rivers, lakes, groundwater and oceans. When fossil fuels are burnt, sulphur dioxide (S02) and nitrogen oxide (N02) are released into the atmosphere. These chemical gases react with water, oxygen, and other substances to form mild solutions of sulphuric and nitric acid. These are highly toxic and end up in our water systems.

South Africa has, in general, a limited supply of water as we rely heavily on groundwater and the quality of this water is being threatened by pollution and the destruction of river catchment areas. Water in South Africa is in great demand and as the human population grows so does our ever increasing need for survival. With this growth comes an increase in pollution and catchment destruction and a decrease in the quality of river water and natural environment.

WHY SOUTH AFRICAN’S SHOULD PURCHASE WATER FILTERS

If we are experiencing this water situation now, what will happen in the future?

South Africa can build more dams and water transfer schemes, but this type of infrastructure is expensive and South Africa’s planning in terms of this is lacking. In terms of water quality, the relevant authorities can clean up rivers and impose fines on those individuals/companies that pollute rivers, but these solutions address the symptoms not the problem. All South African’s should be addressing the cause of the problem, i.e. the lack of water conservation in our daily lives.

The “real” solution is to change attitudes towards water conservation. South Africa needs to become “Water Wise”. To be “Water Wise” means that a person will:

  • Have the utmost RESPECT for water and all life;
  • Use water carefully and not WASTE it;
  • Not POLLUTE rivers with liquid and solid waste;
  • PAY for water services;
  • Take ACTION to solve any water problems;
  • CONSERVE water, and thereby CONSERVE the natural environment.

How Can We Protect our Families Drinking Water?

The obvious answer is every household should protect their family’s health by installing a good quality water filter for drinking and cooking. We all need to face the fact that our water is no longer clean and we cannot remain oblivious to the fact that municipalities provide us with water the looks “good enough” for human consumption and use, when in fact most times it is not.

Under counter water filtration makes it affordable for most homes to purify water, making it more than safe enough for consumption and everyday use. The water filters come in various sizes for different applications and household sizes, but all use similar filtration processes that are proven and tested.

It is up to each one of us as individuals to ensure our drinking and cooking water is safe to drink, so we can secure our families health.
